Before Sunset (2004)

I had not seen the prequel to this although my date had and she filled me in on many details. While the experience of this film would be enriched by having seen the preceding film first, it certainly stands satisfactorily alone.

In many ways, this reminded me very much of one of my most favorite movies of all time, "My Dinner with André," in which just 2 characters talking comprised the whole movie. In that movie, the friends had been close, drifted apart, and then had a brief reunion at a dinner at which they caught up with what the other had been doing. The two principals, André Gregory and Wallace Shawn, played themselves and each represented one side of a dialectic, say the side of romanticism vs. a conventional reality. "Before Sunset" is parallel in many ways.

At one level we have a romantic story -- two people who'd briefly been lovers nine years before and lost touch meet again. They spend an afternoon together. Will they try to fulfill what they'd started?

At another level, we have the charm of conversation and exploration, of reminiscing, of gradually feeling out and discovery of how much do I have in common with this person now? -- where has this person been? -- what are they capable of now? -- how much freedom of choice do I have, does this other person have -- to make decisions? Etc.

While Celine and Jesse have a capacity for relating and talking, they also have somewhat opposite ways of viewing the world and relationships -- Celine is more cynical and reserved; Jesse is more open to settling for the "not-perfect-but-good-enough."

There are possibly a few people who have not had the personal experiences that at least somewhat relate to the premise in this film -- a relationship in which one wonders, "what would have happened if I'd pursued that relation?" but probably most people have. And the other dilemma, of meeting again that someone but by now being involved in relationships of responsibility -- my family, my children, my present life. What would it do to them if I were to pursue my own happiness at the expense of them? Can I do that? Can I value the chance of my own happiness above theirs? Etc.

The film, fortunately, gives us no answers to these essential questions but it does pose them in a way that makes us consider them.

Delpy and Hawke are given screenwriter credits and I feel sure that they must've contributed a great deal to the feeling of seamless, natural dialogue.

Trainspotting (1996)

Trainspotting, A Psychedelic drama tell a story about guys who living with drugs in their daily life, take a setting in Edinburgh, the characters have their own problems and they have same resolution to disentangled themselves from the problems: taking drugs. Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), is the main character who told the narration whole the film and seeing life from a drugs addict’s perspective. His friend, Tommy, attacked by Toxoplasmosis till death. Spud, being in jail for a while then join the team again. And Begsbie, he never taking drugs but he has high temperament and then became an escapee. Sick Boy, this guy was having some serious problems too. Later, Renton has to be rehabilitated by his parents because his addiction became dangerous, and it did well. He moved to London afterwards and work as a house salesman and saving money. He became a ‘mob’ again when offered by his friend to bribe and involved is a transaction. While in his mind, he really wanted to change, especially for his girlfriend, Diane (Kelly MacDonald).

13 years before the success of Sumdog Millionaire, the director Danny Boyle has made a notable movie named Trainspotting. Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, Danny Boyle relied on the dynamic camera movement and creative angle conspicuously. From the beginning Boyle usually uses unequally camera taking. The dominant colors are bright. And for me, the most beautiful scene In the film is when Renton scuffled to control himself against his drug-desire in his room and there are various people he had met in his life, the crawling baby on the canopy, Begsbie come and disappear within his blanket, Spud sat on the cupboard with chain binding his feet, and so on. This film is the #10 best British movie all the time according to The British Film Institution.

Before Sunrise (1995)

"Before Sunrise" is a wonderful love story and has to be among my Top 5 favorite movies ever. Dialog and acting are great. I love the characters and their ideas and thoughts. Of course, the romantic Vienna, introduced in the movie does not exist (you won't find a poet sitting by the river in the middle of the night) and it isn't possible to get to all the places in only one night, either (especially if you're a stranger and it's your first night in Vienna). But that's not the point. The relationship of the two characters is much more important and this part of the story is not at all unrealistic. Although, nothing ever really happens, the movie never gets boring. The ending is genuinely sad without being "Titanic" or something. Even if you don't like love stories you should watch this film!.

The Proposal (2009)

The Proposal is a fun little romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Both actors were believable in their roles and played realistic characters. Much of the fun revolved around some of the minor characters; one being Ramone and the other character played by a true American treasure, Betty White. Betty was very funny in this film and kudos goes to the casting director for getting her in this picture. It was also great to see Mary Steenburgen and Craig T. Nelson.

For you guys who want to bring your lady to a decent romantic comedy...one that you can sit and watch without having to puke, this one is worth a try. Your girl will be happy you went to this film with her and you should be able to have a few laughs as well.

The basic premise is that Bullock, who is Reynolds' boss, will be deported back to Canada unless she marries an American. So she orders Reynolds to marry her and they embark on a trip to Alaska to visit his family. The romance and the comedy then unfolds. A fun little film acted very well.

Take setting during the World War 2, a bunch of British prisoner enforced to build a bridge a Japan colonel, Saito. The bridge will put Rangoon in contact to Bangkok, and will be crossed by a train in twelfth May 1943. Colonel Nicholson refused to work beside his soldiers because it collide with the Geneva Convention. And the problem is the British soldiers don’t want to work except below the order of their leader, and Colonel Saito keep forced because if the target not reached, he shall kill himself. The discharge endeavor started when an escaper named shears, an American soldier which got caught with the British before. He came to the British post in Ceylon and arranged some plans. The climax scene will take a place around the bridge, and there’s a kind of non parallel conflict between Nicholson and Shears, Nicholson want to maintain the bridge because he build it with his own hand, while Shears want to blow the bridge because it will cut the Japanese transportation and would give liberation for the British prisoner.

David Lean, the director, once again prove that he likes make a film with extreme setting, in desert (Laurence of Arabia), in the snow (Doctor Zhivago), this film almost take setting in the dense forest. Alec Guinnes and William Holden are the principal casts and the other prominent casts are Sessue Hayakawa (Colonel Saito), Jack Hawkin (Colonel Warden), and James Donald (Major Clipton). This Film was received six academy awards including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.

Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis make a sweet collaboration with Marilyn Monroe in this Billy Wilder’s Film. A sax and Bass Player, Joe and Jerry, become frantic when they accidentally see a murderer by a mob. Then, the mob chase them in order to kill all the witnesses of their attempt. Joe and Jerry, which have nothing but their bass and sax, know that there is a band, a woman band, who need a players which fitting with their position. Joe and Jerry then turned their shape into women, Josephine and Daphne. Then, guessable, they approved to be part of the band. There, they meet Sugar Kane, the vocalist which Joe later fall in love with her. So he has to turn back into a man shape to when he want to have a date, and back again into Josephine when they play on the stage. While Daphne, not better, an old millionaire fall in love with him (in women shape). And there they struggle to solve their whole problem.

The film is covered by full comedy approach, and a great cinematic technique, I love every scene especially when Joe and Jerry run upstairs and came back through the lift in just about 3 seconds, in different clothes and make up.

Based on the novel The Gentleman From Montana by Lewis R. Foster. Frank Capra directed this film starring James Stewart (Born to Dance, You can’t take it with you), Jean Arthur(Shane), Claude Rains (The Invisible Man, Adventure of Robin Hood), Mr. Smith depicted as a hick guy who came out from his state and directly sit in the senate. Jean Arthur, played as a fierce secretary who later fall in love with Jefferson Smith. Joe Paine was played by Claude Rains. This film is remarked as #26 American Film Institute best American Movies All the Time, right behind To Kill A Mockingbird by Robert Mulligan. It’s well appreciated because of it’s touchy storytelling about the foundation objective of United States of America, the graft which inherently associated with the senate, and it showed how a big business control the people’s mind through the media. Frank Capra (It Happened One Night, Lost Horizon) used dissolve cutting in most part of the film and especially in the beginning, he uses a cluster and fast dialogue among the characters. Well, if you are a fans of political drama, this film is a kind of classical picture you have to see.
